Parvin Sepehr was born in 1939 in Mashad, Iran -- a large city in the northeastern part of the country. Her family later moved to Tehran, where she and her two younger sisters were strongly encouraged by their father to pursue artistic endeavors.
As a young girl, Parvin showed a natural ability for drawing and painting and soon started taking private art lessons in Tehran. She continued her painting throughout her school years, experimenting with different mediums and styles. In her mid-20's, she decided to focus exclusively on watercolor and began to specialize in the Persian Miniature genre.
She later enrolled at Iran's famous "Kamal al Molk" art institute in Tehran and studied watercolor painting under several well-known artists, including Sheik Zavieh, Yousseffi and Altafi. As Sepehr became more skilled, she developed her own pleasing style and reinterpretation of Persian Miniatures.
Sepehr paints mostly from memory and her artwork always begins with a thought, a feeling or a story. She first applies large colorful swaths of watercolor to the paper and then adds the details using highly specialized brushes with very fine points. Dot-by-dot, she creates the details and the story. As such, some of her paintings can take months to complete and some of the fine detail can only be fully appreciated with a magnifying glass.
Her pieces are sometimes large in scale, hence her departure from traditional Persian Miniatures that are generally very small.
She continues to paint every day in her studio in Falls Church, Virginia, located just outside Washington DC.
Sepehr's artwork has been shown in galleries in Iran, Indiana, Ohio, and in Washington, DC. Her paintings are collected by both Iranian and American collectors.
